Why painting is different in Detroit
Most of Detroit was built in the first half of the 1900s. A typical house has brick walls, wood windows and trim, a wood porch and plaster inside. Many frame houses have wood clapboard or aluminum siding from the mid century. Old wood and old plaster need more preparation than new materials, and paint put on without it does not last.
The weather is hard on paint. Detroit gets about 45 inches of snow in an average winter and many swings above and below freezing, followed by humid summers. Exterior work fits into the warm, dry months from late May to early October. Because nearly all of this housing was built before 1978, old paint may contain lead, and federal rules set out how it must be disturbed. In local historic districts, the Detroit Historic District Commission approves new exterior colors.
How we work
It starts with a free estimate. We walk the job, measure and talk about colors and sheen. You get a written quote that lists the prep, the paint and the price. On the job we cover floors and furniture, then patch, sand, caulk and prime. Two coats go on, we clean up fully and we walk the finished work with you. Most interior rooms take one to two days, and a full exterior usually takes three to five days depending on the weather.
