What we paint

Painting services

One room or the whole house? We look at the surfaces, talk colors and sheen, and give you a written quote.

The Detroit Painting Company paints houses, flats, apartments and business premises across Detroit, from Bagley, the University District and Rosedale Park to Boston-Edison, Indian Village and East English Village, and in the nearby Michigan towns listed on this site. The work covers rooms, ceilings and trim indoors, wood, aluminum and porches outdoors, kitchen cabinets, decks and fences. We are licensed and insured. One phone call gets you a visit and a written quote.

Housing here is old and solid. Brick bungalows, two flats, foursquares, Tudors and colonials went up mostly between the 1900s and the 1950s, with plaster inside and painted wood at every window, soffit and porch. An average winter drops about 45 inches of snow and swings above and below freezing again and again, and summer is humid. Paint on poorly prepared wood does not survive that for long. Homes this age may also carry lead in early paint layers.

A job starts with a free estimate at your property. We look at each surface, ask what you want, and send a written quote that names the areas, the repairs and the number of coats. On the agreed day we cover floors, furniture and plants, then scrape, patch, sand, caulk and prime before any finish coat. Exterior days depend on dry weather, so dates can shift. At the end we walk the job with you and fix anything you point out.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to paint a house in Detroit?

By national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, a whole interior costs $3,500 to $10,000 and an exterior costs $3,000 to $10,000 for an average 2,000 square foot home. Those are not our quotes. Size, prep and paint set your price, and we give it in writing after a free estimate.

Does a painter need a licence in Michigan?

Not for painting alone. Michigan removed painting and decorating from its residential maintenance and alteration contractor licence in December 2018. Check insurance and, for homes built before 1978, EPA lead-safe firm certification.

My Detroit house was built before 1978. What about lead paint?

Assume old paint may contain lead until it is tested. Federal rules require firms paid to disturb paint in pre-1978 homes to be EPA certified and to use lead-safe methods. Intact lead paint can usually be painted over.

When is the best time to paint the outside of a house in Detroit?

Late May through September, and often early October. Paint needs warm, dry surfaces, and nights must stay above the minimum temperature on the paint label.

Do I need approval to change my exterior color in Detroit?

A building permit is rarely needed. In a local historic district, the Detroit Historic District Commission must approve a new exterior color. Touch-ups in the exact same color do not need approval.

How long does a paint job take?

Most interior rooms take one to two days. A full exterior usually takes three to five days, depending on the weather.
